Research summary

Grounded in Mannheim's work on social generations, Connell’s theory of multiple masculinities and Butler’s theory of gender performativity, this study seeks to explore how historically specific masculinities are constructed in Bangladesh. In addition, it examines the implications of the enactment of masculinities for men’s sexual health. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 34 men representing three social generations to capture historically specific masculinities and examine the implications of these for men’s sexual health. Findings indicate that there were both social generational similarities and dissimilarities in the construction of masculinity, and in sexual practices and help-seeking practices. Alldred and Fox's assemblage theory was utilised to identify masculinity/sexuality assemblages for each social generation studied. The study offers new theoretical insights into masculinities, gender, sexual practices, and sexual health in the South Asian context.
