Research

Associate Professor Martin Holt specialises in HIV prevention research with gay and bisexual men. A social scientist by training, he has worked at the Centre for Social Research in Health since 2003. He is currently focused on the impact of new forms of HIV prevention, particularly pre-exposure prophylaxis and treatment as prevention, on community norms, attitudes and practices. He is currently working on a book, provisionally titled Antiretroviral Sex: Risk, Safety and Biosociality (Springer).

Martin manages the Gay Community Periodic Surveys, the main part of Australia's behavioural surveillance system for HIV. He leads a longitudinal study of the social aspects of biomedical HIV prevention for gay and bisexual men (the PrEPARE project) and the COUNT study of undiagnosed HIV infection among gay men. COUNT will be conducted in Sydney in 2018 (funded by a NHMRC Partnership Project). He is a chief investigator on a range of other projects, including:

  • the Crystal, Pleasures and Sex between Men project, funded by a NHMRC Project grant, investigating crystal methamphetamine use by gay and bisexual men, led by Prof Carla Treloar
  • a NHMRC Partnership Project evaluating the New South Wales HIV Strategy, led by Prof Andrew Grulich
  • a randomised controlled trial of home-based HIV testing (FORTH), led by A/Profs Rebecca Guy and Garrett Prestage;
  • the PrEPX demonstration project of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis in Victoria, led by A/Prof Edwina Wright;
  • the StraightMSM Study researching heterosexually-identified men who have sex with men, led by Drs Christy Newman and Asha Persson
  • an online cohort study monitoring and evaluating HIV risk and prevention among gay and bisexual men in Victoria, led by A/Prof Mark Stoové
  • a study trialling dried blood spot self-sampling for HIV testing in NSW, led by Jo Holden

Martin is the recipient of $9 million in research funding and has published 90 peer-reviewed journal articles. He is actively involved with the HIV sector, gay community organisations, and the Association for the Social Sciences and Humanities in HIV. In 2013 he became a Deputy Editor of the Journal of the International AIDS Society. In 2015 he was a Visiting Fellow at the British Columbia Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies in San Francisco. In 2017 he is national co-convenor of the the Australasian HIV/AIDS Conference.
